University of Winnipeg has free self-defense classes for women

City residents continue to hear about attacks on women.

In this regard, the University of Winnipeg created a special program that can give women and girls confidence in their defense. Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre at the university’s RecPlex offers women take free self-defense classes.

Angeline Nelson, the U of W’s Director of Community Learning & Engagement, explained that the university created the program when the situation connected with missing and murdering of girls and women of the Indigenous population became too urgent in the city.

Many women immediately supported the program and it began to have great success.

Currently, this is the only program in Winnipeg that offers women take self-defense classes for free. The city had a great need for such a program, and the University of Winnipeg made a huge contribution to the protection of women in the city.

The class is taught by Prof. Jason Parenteau. He is a great teacher and knows jiu-jitsu. He teaches women self-defense and opportunities to escape from the attacker. In addition, he uses various psychological techniques to increase women's self-esteem and self-confidence. Women learn more about the boundaries of personal space and how to say no.
