The crime is on the rise in Canada for the last couple of years, and the Winnipeg, unfortunately, is not an exception. Violent attacks, beating, and stabbing happens almost every day in our city. Winnipeg Police dedicate a lot of manpower and recourses to fight crime, to locate and punish those responsible for criminal activity in the city.
Police Cst. Jay Murray said on Tuesday, March 12th that the number of firearm-related homicides, as well as the number of homicides in general, is up from past years. Last year there were only three homicides out of 22 that were as the result of a firearm discharge.
This year there are five cases out of eight already, which is a very disturbing trend. Winnipeg Police seized over 750 ‘crime guns’, firearms used in offenses, last year alone. The increase in guns and the weapons’ frequent ties to the drug trade have led to the cops restructuring and rebranding their Street Crime Unit as the Guns and Gangs Unit.
Crime level constantly growing in Winnipeg, the trend continues for the last couple of years. Car theft, drugs, property theft, and property damage…the list goes on and on. More and more calls about robbery and break-ins coming to police every day.
Also, drug trafficking is a big problem in the city, both are connected, guns and drugs are often the factors in the majority of the crimes. Winnipeg authorities started a full-scale investigation into the city`s meth problem. As per Winnipeg Police, there is a spike in meth-related crime incidents, like property theft, residential break-ins, unreasonable anger towards each other (meth users) and other people around them, violent attacks, some ending up in lethal outcomes for victims.
Police and local authorities put a lot of effort and manpower to fight the crime in our country to make our city a better and safer place to work and to live in.
