Transit drivers together with Winnipeg kids show that they do not forget the tragedy that happened two years ago.
Students from Winnipeg's Luxton elementary school created more than 274 handwritten notes in March 2017 and gave them to Transit drivers. On Thursday, February 28, Transit drivers came with gratitude towards the children. Drivers brought treats and letters of thanks. They also brought a thank-you banner.
The transit union said that children's creativity is incredibly important and they showed great support in difficult times for drivers.
"It's a sign that says thank you for reaching out. Thank you for touching our lives," Aleem Chaudhary, president of the union said. "Something wonderful happened today. These kids brought us together. These young, young people brought this whole community, the whole city, together. As far as I'm concerned it's one of the best things I've ever seen."
Luxton teacher Robert Schulz was very excited about the kids.
"The bus drivers were very pleased and humbled by your letters," he said.
"So when the kids found out the bus drivers were hurting, they wanted to share their feelings and let them know that we supported them … as neighbours," Schulz added.
The school is very close to Winnipeg Transit's bus garage on Main Street. Children found out that many drivers are parents of students from the school.
"This is an experience that should be felt by everybody. It's very, very touching and my heart is full," Chaudhary said. "This is respectful, this is community, this is love, this is consideration. This is awesome."
