The first bench created from recycled plastic bags appeared in Winnipeg.
Manitoba students took part in an annual recycling program under which they collected almost a million plastic bags. The recycling program turned the plastic bags into benches that Manitoba schools can use now.
More than 150 schools in Manitoba participated in the collection of plastic bags for the recycling program.
On Tuesday, one of the benches appeared in Winnipeg at General Byng School and the students were very excited to see what their work led to.
The executive director of Take Pride Winnipeg!, Tom Ethans, said that now students see that they can change the world for the better.
"The reaction of the students of the schools we've been to has been incredible," he said. "They are so wowed by the bench and by the fact that they've taken something that they know is a plastic bag and now it's something tangible like a bench like that. They are in awe."
Now, children will be able to come home and to tell their parents about their contribution to environmental protection and the transformation of their native city. Tom Ethans hopes that parents will encourage the initiative of their children and will also take part in the program, collecting plastic bags at home.
As it became known, the bench was created by the local company ReGen Composites.
