The big construction project on repairing the rail line and clearing the washouts to renew the railway connection between Churchill and Gillam is almost finished. The federal government announced the investment of $117 million for the repair works and for dealing with the washout damages.
The workers from Churchill and a massive workforce that was brought for out of town together finished the project with no delays and trains will be running the route very soon.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised that the rail connection with Churchill in northern Manitoba will return to normal by the end of the month.
Trudeau visited the community on the shores of Hudson Bay, where residents celebrated the arrival of the first train, which did not arrive in the city for more than a year.
The flood in the spring of 2017 damaged the tracks and severed the only ground connection with the city with a population of 900 people. The federal government provided $ 74 million to help repair the railroad. Trudeau thanked the Churchill people for their patience and said that their long wait was finally over.
The first test train arrived in town on Wednesday evening, November 7th, one day ahead of schedule.
