Last Friday, November 2nd early morning five people took police on one crazy ride, a twelve and a half hour armed standoff, ended with arrests and the attempted murder charges.
Approximately 4:20 a.m. police had received a call about the suspicious activity at the Gilbert Park housing complex in the 100 block of Chudley Street. They immediately took two men into custody and attempted to contact others inside without success. Right away the police began treating this as an armed and barricaded situation.
A young woman is a victim of this crime, 23-year old received multiple injuries, mostly to the upper body and was delivered to a hospital in unstable condition.
Shortly after, police had arrested two men, including one of the suspects, everyone inside the house was eventually taken into custody and a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun was seized.
A 15-year-old male is believed to be the shooter and has been charged with attempted murder. Edward Kenneth Munroe, 18, and Lonny Lee Chudrick, 22, have been charged with aggravated assault, and also face several robbery and weapon charges. Two other teens, a 16-year-old boy, and a 13-year-old boy, both from Winnipeg, were charged with failure to comply with a condition undertaking by a judge.
The ordeal was finally over at 4:50 p.m. with no injuries, that makes it a twelve and a half hour long armed standoff.
Another dramatic standoff happened a week before that, on Thursday, October 25th in south Winnipeg. The ordeal started at about 3:40 p.m. Police say the man initially locked several employees inside, but they were able to quickly flee the building. CJOB reporter Will Reimer said he witnessed what he described as “an explosion of gunfire” at 7:20 p.m. that turned out to be a less-lethal weapon, according to police. Witnesses said it appeared to be a beanbag gun. The man was taken away in handcuffs.
Thankfully, nobody got injured, a man was arrested and remains in police custody. The negotiating team was also called to talk the man down. A negotiating team tried to convince a lone man inside a liquor store, armed with a knife, to put down his weapon.
The standoff ended a couple hours later, nobody got hurt, so as police officers said, this is the best scenario for such an intense situation. The investigation is still continuing, detectives are working to cover all possible angles, to check all the reasons, which could lead to such outcome. No information about the arrested man, if he is working with the investigation if he provided the statement of what happened and why he acted in such a way.
